Mohammad Farhan bin Haji Ismail, Winner of IET Award 2010 from Maktab Kejuruteraan Jefri Bolkiah (MKJB
One student at the Jefri Bolkiah College of Engineering who received a best student award and an award from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) at the 13th Convocation for Vocational and Technical Education Institutions (VTET) yesterday, recommended that degree courses on vocational and technical education be introduced for students to pursue higher education.
Eddy Aslins Lintong told The Brunei Times that pursuing degree courses in Brunei would allow Bruneian students to obtain "a better qualification" and for the country to be known for having local graduates in engineering courses, for example.
Lintong received both awards for obtaining 12 distinctions during his two-year course in Plant Engineering, and said he was "happy and delighted". He explained he obtained consistent grades by concentrating in class at all times, and preparing for exams one month before.
"I also participated in a lot of group discussions. If I did not understand anything, I also made sure I asked my teachers," he said, adding students should also do the same to do well in their studies.
Next month, Lintong will be starting work at Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd as an Operator Technician.
Meanwhile, 22-year-old Mohd Farhan Hj Ismail at the Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College (MTSSR) also received an award from IET, for getting five distinctions in his National Diploma in Engineering (Computer Studies) course.
"I did not know I was nominated for this prestigious award. I am truly honoured that I am getting it," he said.
Having done the course for two and a half years, Mohd Farhan said it was a platform for him to find out what skills he was good at, and nurture them.
"I am good at programming, and I hope to develop softwares and appliances to make Bruneian's lives easier in the future," he said.
In the meantime, Mohd Farhan said he will soon continue his studies at Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) in Multimedia Development.
The third student, Farah Umi Kalthom Abdullah at the Sayyidina Hasan Secondary School, also received a "best student award" for obtaining excellent results in her National Vocational Certificate in Clerical Studies.
She too, said she was "really happy" because receiving the award was unexpected.
She hoped that by pursuing the course, it would help her easily obtain an administrative job at either the private or public sector in the near future. |
